Civil Rights Movement

We're gonna post on the Civil Rights Movement 'cause of the demented Open Court story Pretty Pennies. In 1948 President Truman signed Executive Order 9981 which states that all government officials were treated equally. 1954- Supreme Court rules segregation in schools is unconstitutional. 1955- Rosa parks does not give up her seat on the bus, and is sent to jail. 1957- Dr.King establishes the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. 1962- James Meredith becomes first black person to enrol in University of Mississippi. 1963-MLK (not to be confused with "milk") is arrested during a anti segregation protest. During civil rights protests in Birmingham, Ala., Commissioner of Public Safety Eugene "Bull" Connor uses fire hoses and police dogs on black demonstrators. On Aug. 28, 63 Dr.King Gives his "I Have a Dream" speech after a march. 1964-the 24th amendment which restricts blacks voting rights in 11 states is abolished. Prez. Johnson creates Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits discrimination of race or color. 1965-Congress passes the Voting Rights Act of 1965, making it easier for Southern blacks to register to vote. Literacy tests, poll taxes, and other such requirements that were used to restrict black voting are made illegal. Executive Order 11646 is issued to stop unemployment of blacks because of color. 1968, April 4th Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is shot on his hotel balcony. James Earl Ray, an escaped convict, is held responsible. Thus, the sad end to my civil rights history report. :( See you next time! And it wont be so sad. It'll be on Apollo 9! Just kidding!
